Rabies in the UAE

The vaccine your pet's paperwork is built on

The rabies vaccine in Dubai is not a lifestyle choice. Rabies vaccination is required by UAE law for owned dogs and cats, and the certificate that comes with it is the document your pet's municipality registration, its tag, its boarding booking and any move abroad all rest on.

At Petbook Veterinary Clinic in Al Quoz 3 the rabies vaccine is given by a licensed veterinarian after an examination, inside our AED 199 Annual Vaccination Package. The full package breakdown is on our pet vaccination in Dubai page, and every price the clinic publishes is on the vet prices in Dubai page.

Bitten or scratched by a free-roaming animal, or a wound you cannot explain? Do not wait for the next free slot — our emergency vet line in Dubai is answered 24/7.

  • Required by UAE law

Rabies vaccination is mandatory for owned dogs and cats here — the one vaccine that is never a judgement call.

  • Certificate in your pet's name

Issued against your pet's identity and microchip number, so the document matches the animal it describes.

  • Inside the AED 199 annual visit

Rabies comes with the annual package — examination, core viral vaccine, deworming and dental check included.

  • We watch the expiry date

Kept on a digital record with a reminder before it lapses, because a gap in the rabies date is what causes trouble.

I had a wonderful experience at Petbook Veterinary Clinic in Al Quoz with my 9-month-old male Turkish Angora cat, Meiko. A special thank you to Dr. Emad and Miss Charrie for their excellent care, kindness, patience, and professionalism.

I highly recommend this veterinary clinic! They truly care about pets as if they were their own babies. Every time my cats have been sick, the team has always followed up to check on their recovery & see if they needed anything else. That level of care & compassion means so much to me 🤍

How it works

From the vaccine to valid paperwork

The injection takes seconds. What owners in Dubai actually come for is a paper trail that survives a house move, a boarding booking and an airline desk.

  1. Step 01

We read what your pet already has

Record book, foreign certificate, adoption papers, or nothing at all. The last rabies date decides everything else, so we find it first.

  2. Step 02

    Examination before the vaccine

A licensed veterinarian checks your pet on the day. A vaccine belongs in a healthy animal — if today is not the day, we say so.

  3. Step 03

    Identity matched to the record

A certificate is only useful if it points at your pet. We record the microchip number and description so document and animal cannot come apart.

  4. Step 04

    The rabies vaccine is given

By a licensed veterinarian, with the details written into your pet's file. When it falls due next is set by the vet, not by a chart online.

  5. Step 05

    Certificate issued and stored

You leave with the signed certificate, and we keep a digital copy — so a lost record book stops being a crisis.

  6. Step 06

    A reminder before it lapses

We flag the expiry ahead of time, because a gap in the rabies record is what delays registration, boarding and travel.

The Dubai paperwork angle

Why the rabies date matters more in Dubai

Rabies is the only pet vaccine in the UAE written into the rules rather than the recommendations. That is why the date on the certificate matters far more than owners expect.

  • Registration runs on it

Registering an owned dog or cat in Dubai is a documents process, and a current rabies record is one of them. No record, no tag.

  • Al Quoz is a working district

Warehouses, yards and open car parks mean free-roaming cats and dogs are part of the neighbourhood your pet lives in.

  • Contact happens at ground level

Balconies, service corridors and the walk to the car are where an indoor pet meets an animal with no known history.

  • Travel counts from the date

Every destination sets its own rule on how long after vaccination a pet may fly, and some ask for a rabies antibody titre test. Plan in months, not weeks.

  • Boarding and grooming ask first

A cattery, kennel or salon wants a valid rabies record before your pet comes through the door — and so do many buildings.

  • A lapse can restart the clock

Letting the date run out is not just a late booster — for travel and registration, a gap in the record pushes timelines back.

Rabies is included in the AED 199 Annual Vaccination Package. For rabies on its own, or a titre test, message us on WhatsApp for a same-day quote.

Timing

When rabies is due — and why the date matters

Rabies comes later than a puppy's or kitten's first core vaccines, and is then kept current for life. How much later, and how often, depends on your pet's age, health and the product used — the veterinarian sets the date at the visit and writes it onto the certificate.

  • Puppies and kittens: rabies follows the first core vaccines, once your pet is old enough
  • Adults: kept current at the annual visit, so the certificate never expires quietly
  • Adopted or imported pets: we work from the record you have, or start a clean one
  • Planning to fly: work backwards from the destination's rules — months, not weeks
Do not wait

When a bite or scratch cannot wait for an appointment

Rabies is why a wound from an unknown animal is urgent rather than routine. Call us the same day — and if a person was bitten or scratched, they should see a human doctor immediately.

  • A bite or scratch from a free-roaming cat or dog, or any animal you do not know
  • A puncture wound you cannot explain on a pet that goes outside
  • Contact with a bat, or any wild animal behaving strangely
  • A fight with an animal whose vaccination history is unknown to you
  • Something has happened and your pet's rabies record has already lapsed
  • A sudden, unexplained change in behavior after an outdoor incident

Common questions

Is 7 days too late for rabies vaccine?

If your pet has been bitten or exposed, this is not a wait-and-see situation — call us the same day rather than counting days at home, and bring whatever record you have. For a routine booster that has slipped, a week is not a disaster, but do not leave it: what matters is that the record has no gap.

Is UAE rabies free?

The UAE is considered very low risk and cases in pets are rare, which is exactly why the rules on rabies vaccination and registration are strict. Low risk is the result of the requirement, not a reason to skip it — and countries you travel to still want the certificate.

How much does a rabies shot cost in Dubai?

At Petbook the rabies vaccine is included in the AED 199 Annual Vaccination Package, together with the examination, the core viral vaccine, deworming and a dental check. We do not publish a separate price for rabies on its own — message us on WhatsApp and we will quote it the same day.

How do I register my pet with Dubai Municipality?

Registration is a documents exercise: the authority wants your pet identified and its vaccinations current, which in practice means a microchip and a valid rabies record. We hand you the certificate and keep a digital copy, so you are not chasing paperwork at renewal.

How long is a pet passport?

The record book itself does not really expire — what expires are the entries inside it, and the rabies date is the one that matters. Airlines and destination countries apply their own timing rules on top. Keep the rabies entry current and the passport keeps working.
