What an ultrasound appointment actually involves
Most scans take twenty to forty-five minutes. Here is the visit in order, so nothing surprises you.

We agree what we are looking for
History and examination first: how long the vomiting has run, the mating date, the litter tray pattern. That decides the area scanned, and whether an X-ray belongs with it.

A few hours without food
Food and gas hide everything behind them, so abdominal scans need six to eight hours off food — water stays down. Pregnancy and heart scans usually need none.

A small patch of fur clipped
The probe must touch skin, and trapped air blurs the picture. We clip the smallest patch that will do, usually on the belly; it grows back.

Gel, and a comfortable position
Your pet lies on a padded table while someone steadies and reassures. Most cats and dogs stay awake; sedation is only for a pet in pain or too frightened to hold still, never without asking you.

The scan itself
The probe passes over each organ in turn — liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder, gut — measuring wall thickness and looking for free fluid. A cardiac scan follows flow through the valves.
