Pet PCR Test in Dubai — Name the Infection, Not the Symptom
PCR reads the genetic material of the virus, bacterium or fungus itself — so a sneezing cat, a feverish dog or a travel deadline gets a named answer instead of a guess.

What PCR tells you that a snap test cannot
A pet PCR test looks for the genetic fingerprint of whatever is making your animal ill — the DNA or RNA of the organizm itself, not the antibodies your pet builds weeks later. It works on day two of an infection, in a kitten too young to have responded, and when a rapid in-clinic kit comes back ambiguous.
The panels we run most in Al Quoz are feline: herpesvirus, calicivirus, chlamydia and mycoplasma from a single swab, and FeLV, FIV, panleukopenia and feline coronavirus from blood. For dogs it is parvovirus and distemper, plus the tick-borne group that matters here — ehrlichia, anaplasma and babesia. Dermatophyte (ringworm) PCR on plucked hair reads in days rather than the weeks a culture needs.
Sampling goes through our in-house veterinary laboratory, and a vet talks you through the report rather than emailing a PDF. Consultation is AED 75 — everything we publish sits on our prices page — and panels are quoted per test, so message us on WhatsApp for a same-day quote. Cat owners can start at our cat vet page; if she is unwell tonight, the emergency line is answered 24/7.
-
It names the organizm
PCR amplifies the pathogen's own DNA or RNA, so the report says which virus or bacterium — not just positive or negative.
-
Feline panels, run daily
Herpesvirus, calicivirus, chlamydia and mycoplasma from one swab; FeLV, FIV, panleukopenia and coronavirus from blood.
-
Canine and tick-borne panels
Parvovirus and distemper, plus ehrlichia, anaplasma and babesia — the trio behind most unexplained fevers in Gulf dogs.
-
Quoted before it runs
We publish no PCR price list, because the panel is only clear after the exam. You approve the quote before the sample is taken.
What Petbook clients say
Reviews from our public Google profile. Few owners name a test in a review, so read these as feedback on the clinic, not on PCR specifically.

khadidja belairche 4 weeks ago I highly recommend this veterinary clinic! They truly care about pets as if they were their own babies. Every time my cats have been sick, the team has always followed up to check on their recovery & see if they needed anything else. That level of care & compassion means so much to me 🤍

How a PCR test actually runs
The whole sequence, including where you see a price.
- Step 01
The vet picks the panel
One target and a six-target respiratory panel are different answers and different bills. We take the history — new arrival, boarding stay, tick last week, flight date — and test for what fits.
- Step 02
The sample: swab, blood, feces or hair
Conjunctival and oropharyngeal swabs for respiratory cases. Blood for FeLV, FIV and tick-borne panels. Feces for giardia and parvovirus. Plucked hair and crusts for ringworm.
- Step 03
Taken in minutes, no sedation
A swab is seconds, a blood draw not much longer. Nervous cats are wrapped and handled quietly rather than pinned; a hair pluck just needs forceps.
- Step 04
Why the rapid kit was not enough
Snap tests need a decent load of antigen or antibody to trip. PCR amplifies genetic material, so it catches early infection — and separates herpesvirus from calicivirus, ehrlichia from babesia.
- Step 05
The result, explained by a vet
Results come back within days. A veterinarian calls and goes through it: what was detected, and whether it explains the symptoms or reflects a carrier state — common with feline herpesvirus.
- Step 06
What happens next
A named organizm becomes a plan: which animals to separate, whether the other cats in the flat need testing, what to recheck and when.

You see the quote before the swab
The consultation is AED 75. PCR is quoted per panel, because testing one target and testing six are not the same bill — we tell you which your pet needs, and what it costs, before anything is sampled. Nothing is added to the invoice afterwards.
- A vet chooses the panel; you approve the quote before sampling
- Same-day appointments, and the emergency line answered 24/7

Why PCR earns its place in Dubai
What we chase here is not the textbook European list. Three things shape it: a huge community-cat population, year-round tick pressure, and constant relocation.
-
The community-cat population
Dubai's street and compound cats carry FeLV, FIV, calicivirus and panleukopenia at rates a closed indoor population never sees. A kitten from a car park arrives with no history.
-
Ticks take no winter off
Ehrlichia, anaplasma and babesia are established across the Gulf, and the brown dog tick breeds indoors in air conditioning. Fever, bruising or a low platelet count means a tick-borne panel here.
-
Before the new cat meets the resident one
Adoptions and fosters move fast here. FeLV and FIV testing before the carrier is opened at home is the difference between one cat's diagnosis and three.
-
A city people move out of
Destination countries and airlines set their own testing and certificate requirements. Bring the list your agent or the embassy gave you and we work back from the flight date.
-
Boarding, grooming and shelter air
Cats share air in boarding blocks and grooming rooms across Dubai, so one sneezing cat becomes four. Naming the virus tells you what spread.
-
Heat, humidity and ringworm
Summer humidity and a long indoor season suit dermatophytes, and ringworm passes to people. Hair-pluck PCR reads in days; a culture plate takes three weeks.
None of this argues for testing everything — only the pet whose history, symptoms or travel date calls for it.
When PCR beats a standard test
Most cases never need it. Examination, in-house bloods and a rapid kit settle the majority the same visit, and PCR costs more than all three. It earns that when the exact organizm changes what happens next.
Four situations where we usually suggest it:
- A new cat or kitten from the street, a shelter or a rescue — FeLV and FIV before it meets the cat you already have, not after
- A fever or illness that did not respond as expected — bruising or a low platelet count in a dog points at a tick-borne panel
- A travel, import or export deadline — the destination sets the testing list and the certificate wording, and we work to it
- A skin lesion that keeps spreading — dermatophyte PCR on plucked hair reads in days, where a fungal culture can take three weeks
Signs that mean test now, not next week
Here the delay costs more than the panel — the animal goes downhill fast, or every day exposes the pets around it.
- A cat sneezing with eye or nose discharge for over a week — or a second cat starting the same
- A puppy with vomiting or bloody diarrhea: parvovirus is an isolation case from the first hour
- A dog with fever, nosebleeds, bruising or pinpoint red spots on the gums after a tick
- A newly adopted cat losing weight, with mouth ulcers or gums that will not heal
- A kitten that stops eating and goes flat within a day; panleukopenia moves fast
- A spreading circle of hair loss, or the same lesion on someone in the house
Common questions
What is a PCR test for cats?
It is a laboratory test that looks for the DNA or RNA of an organizm in a sample taken from your cat — a swab, blood, feces or plucked hair. In cats we use it most for the respiratory group (feline herpesvirus, calicivirus, chlamydia and mycoplasma), for FeLV and FIV, for panleukopenia, and for feline coronavirus when FIP is being considered. Because it detects the organizm itself rather than your cat's antibody response, it works early in an infection and in kittens too young to have made antibodies.
How much is a PCR test for cats?
It depends on the panel — testing one target and running a six-target respiratory panel are different prices, and we do not publish a PCR price list because the right panel is only clear after the examination. The consultation is AED 75. Message us on WhatsApp for a same-day quote, and you approve the cost before any sample is taken.
Where can I get a health certificate for my cat?
From a licensed veterinary clinic — we issue and stamp health certificates at our Al Quoz 3 clinic. What the certificate must say, and which tests have to sit behind it, is decided by the destination country and the airline rather than by us, and the rules differ by route. Send us the requirement list from your relocation agent or the destination authority and we work backwards from your flight date.
How do I know if my dog has tick fever?
Often you cannot tell from the outside. The usual signs — fever, lethargy, going off food, bruising or nosebleeds, sometimes lameness — look like a dozen other things, and a dog can carry ehrlichia for months while appearing well. What settles it is bloods together with a tick-borne PCR panel for ehrlichia, anaplasma and babesia, run from a small blood sample. Finding a tick is a good reason to ask; not finding one is not a reason to relax.
Which pets can undergo PCR testing?
Any animal we can take a sample from. In practice that is mostly cats and dogs — the feline respiratory group, FeLV and FIV, panleukopenia and parvovirus, and the tick-borne panel for ehrlichia, anaplasma and babesia — but the method is not species-specific, and we also handle birds, rabbits and other small mammals. The sample is a swab, a small blood draw, feces or plucked hair depending on what is being looked for, and most are collected during the consultation without sedation. Message us on WhatsApp with the species and the suspicion for a same-day quote.
