A feline consultation is a physical examination, not a formality. Here is what the veterinarian works through, in order.

Appetite, water intake, litter tray habits and anything that changed recently — the litter tray is often the most useful thing you can describe.

Weight and body condition
Weighed on the same scale every visit. Quiet weight loss is the earliest sign of most feline disease, and a thick coat hides it.

Heart, chest and breathing
A murmur or a raised resting breathing rate found here is what leads to imaging before a cat is ever in trouble.

Mouth and teeth

Signs your cat needs to be seen today
Cats are built to look fine until they are not. Any of these means a same-day appointment — or, after hours, the emergency line.

Common questions
How to tell if a cat is suffering?
Pain in cats shows up as absence, not noise. The specific signs are a tucked, hunched posture with the eyes half closed, refusing a jump she has always made, flinching or turning when one area is touched, faster and shallower breathing at rest, and a tense face with the ears held slightly flat and out to the side. Purring is not proof of comfort — cats purr when they are frightened too. If any of that is there, treat it as pain until a vet has ruled it out and book a same-day examination.
What is the silent killer of cats?
Chronic kidney disease is the one usually called that: a cat can lose a large share of kidney function before anything looks wrong at home. The early hints are drinking more, urinating more and slow weight loss. Blood and urine testing at the annual visit — twice a year past eight — is what finds it.
When should I worry about my cat not eating?
After about 24 hours. Cats are not built to fast: when they stop eating, fat moves to the liver and can cause hepatic lipidosis, which is far harder to treat than whatever caused the lost appetite. Book a same-day appointment rather than waiting to see if she picks up tomorrow.
What are the symptoms of a sick cat?
The reliable ones are behavioral: hiding, sitting hunched, sleeping somewhere new, stopping grooming or over-grooming one spot, litter tray changes, and any shift in appetite or drinking. Vomiting more than the odd hairball, bad breath and weight loss belong on the same list.
